Off to a Good Start is our popular and FREE annual physical activity and nutrition program emphasizing the importance of at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day to improve general health, maintain a healthy weight, lower cholesterol, reduce depression, and help in the prevention of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some forms of cancer.
Free breakfast and lunch! All attendees will participate in a drawing of prizes, including gift cards.
This year our panel of experts will focus on lung cancer. We are proud to welcome Natalie Shaubie Lui, Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery (Thoracic Surgery) at Stanford and Floyd Rocker, Lung Cancer Survivor. (More speakers will be announced soon.)
Panelists
Dr. Lui studied physics as an undergraduate at Harvard before attending medical school at Johns Hopkins. She completed a general surgery residency at the University of California San Francisco, which included two years of research in the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Laboratory and completion of a Master in Advanced Studies in clinical research. Dr. Lui went on to hold a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, during which she participated in visiting rotations at Memorial Sloan Kettering and the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Lui’s surgical practice consists of general thoracic surgery with a focus on thoracic oncology and roboticthoracic surgery. Her research interests include intraoperative molecular imaging for lung cancer localization,increasing rates of lung cancer screening, and using artificial intelligence to predict lung cancer recurrence. She isthe recipient of the Donald B. Doty Educational Award in 2019 from the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, theDwight C. McGoon Award for teaching from the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association in 2020, and the Carolyn E.Reed Traveling Fellowship from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation and Women in Thoracic Surgery in 2022.
Dr. Julia Chandler, Breast Cancer Surgeon
Dr. Julia Chandler is a surgeon who cares for patients with breast cancer. She aims to provide the most up-to-date proven treatments for breast cancer and high-risk breast tissue changes. Her procedural expertise includes lumpectomy, nipple-sparing mastectomy and lymph node surgery. She works closely with plastic surgeons who specialize in breast reconstruction to make sure every patient has the best possible cosmetic outcome.
Chandler's research focuses on how to provide the highest quality breast cancer care to the greatest number of people. Also deeply committed to education, she enjoys teaching medical students and surgery residents. She has a master's degree in education, and before becoming a doctor, she was a high school teacher.
Chandler earned her medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine. She then completed a residency in general surgery at Stanford, where she received the program's Samuel L. Kountz, MD Humanitarian Award for her exceptional patient care. She completed a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She also has a master's degree in health policy from Stanford.
Chandler is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and Society of Surgical Oncology. When not working, she enjoys being outdoors and spending time with her family.
Margaret Davis, RD
Margaret practiced for many years in specialty areas of medical nutrition including a long stint in Oncology at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Fostering nutrition education as a part of medical care empowered clients to take an active role in their treatment plans. She now enjoys her new career of retirement with occasional forays into nutrition education for the public and medical community.
Floyd Rocker
Floyd Rocker has worked in the creatives industry for more than three decades as an art buyer, creative department director, and project manager in international advertising. He’s currently living in the Bay Area. He was diagnosed with Stage 1B lung cancer in October 2022.
After a successful surgery, he is now cancer free. Advocating for cancer awareness is more than just a personal interest - it’s a calling for Floyd to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease. By spreading awareness, Floyd knows we can empower individuals to take charge of their health, promote early detection, and save lives. As an advocate, he is committed to making a positive impact in the fight against cancer and helping to create a world where this disease no longer holds power over us.
