Nutrition
Good nutrition helps prevent diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer, and has led BACHAC and our church partners to make education a priority in healthier lifestyle programs.
Cheryl Davis, nutrition educator and BACHAC consultant, assists Westside Church with the church’s focus on healthy eating, and Linda Burroughs heads a comprehensive health ministry program at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Both emphasize the importance of healthy eating to lessen the incidence of metabolic syndrome and its associated diseases.
At the 2012 “Off to a Good Start” event, Davis’ nutrition presentation laid the foundation for Chef Berlin Lillard to demonstrate how to use nutrition principles to prepare healthy food. In August 2013, the chef again partnered with us to present an interactive healthy cooking class. At six cooking stations, the chef helped participants prepare a healthy lunch.
Burroughs’ work at Pilgrim Baptist also involves an annual diabetes luncheon with interactive cooking demonstrations. The church is one of the nearly 20 BACHAC partner churches that provide health screenings, including blood glucose testing.
